Writing voice
How do you help AI keep your writing voice?
Use your own samples to identify tone, sentence rhythm and structure. Refine the saved style, then test it on a fresh paragraph.
What you will work toward
A writing style guide you have reviewed and a new paragraph you can use to judge whether it sounds like you. You can keep refining the guide over time.
Before you start
- A few pieces you wrote yourself and whose voice you like. There is no required number; fewer samples simply support narrower conclusions.
- Optional shorter everyday writing, labeled by platform and date. Keep other authors’ work separate from your own voice samples.
- A new topic and real source material to test whether the style transfers beyond the original articles.
1Save representative samples under the right role
Open “My writing style,” paste a sample in the material entry area, give it a recognizable title and save it. Split a long article at paragraph boundaries and label its parts with the same article title.
Each entry currently accepts up to 10,000 characters; an analysis uses up to the latest 50,000 characters. Several records may be parts of one article. For separate projects, select the appropriate role before adding samples so their styles do not get mixed together.
2Generate the guide and check its evidence
Choose the generate writing style action. Check the material coverage section first: did it identify the samples you intended to use? Then compare its observations and supporting excerpts with your writing.
Look at how you open a piece, the expressions you use, sentence length, paragraph rhythm and the order of ideas and examples. A feature in one article does not have to become a rule for every future piece. A recurring topic is not the same thing as a writing style.
Edit the style guide to remove unsupported claims and replace vague adjectives with specific habits you recognize. Save your changes. For example, an observation about the order you present events and judgments is more actionable than “warm,” but only keep it if your samples support it.
3Test a short passage on a new topic
Return to a content assistant using the same role. The saved writing style is included with the conversation request. The personal profile toggle controls business background; it is separate from the writing style.
Ask for an opening first. Read it beside one of your samples and identify exactly what feels wrong: sentences that are too long, an overly forceful tone or a conclusion that arrives too early. Specific feedback gives a clearer direction than “make it less like AI.”
Refer to the writing style saved for this role and draft only an opening for a new article. Do not write the full article yet. Topic: [fill in] Audience: [fill in] Point I want to make: [fill in] Real material for this piece: [fill in] Expression habits to preserve: [choose a few from the style guide] Expressions to avoid: [fill in] Borrow tone and organization only. Do not reuse people, numbers, experiences or distinctive lines from the old samples. Ask me if new source material is missing.
4Keep the corrections that prove useful
Choose a sentence that does not sound like you. Supply your version and explain why. For example: “This sounds like an advertisement. I usually describe what happened before giving my view. Please use that order.” This illustrates specific feedback, not a universal style rule.
Once the opening works, develop the rest. Add recurring, useful preferences to your saved style guide. Saving new samples does not automatically update the analysis: regenerate or edit it when needed. These changes also do not mean you have trained a dedicated language model.
Review before you finish
- Style observations have evidence; one-off features and suggested improvements are not presented as fixed habits.
- The words, tone and rhythm are things I would actually say when reading aloud.
- The new draft does not borrow old experiences or invent facts to imitate my voice.
- The right role is selected, changes are saved, and I have kept copies of important source material.
Your next step
Use a real topic you are working on. Calibrate the opening before developing the article, then save one useful correction and test it again next time.
